Scandal Season 3 Premiere Episode Recap + Review
Joe Morton as Rowan Pope is amazing. (Also, sort of evil and scary.) It’s incredibly interesting to learn more about Olivia’s life because she (and Harrison) are two characters about whom we know the least. Now we know that Olivia’s mom died when she was 12 and she was sent to school all over the world with the rumor of a sweet, old dad at home. But really she was sent to school all over the world because her real dad was busy commanding an army of highly trained assassins who protected the country. It’s not like he could come and speak on career day.
So now the question is, does Cyrus know that this man is Olivia’s father? In the kill-folder session, he seemed not to know much about her background, which makes sense because she’s tight-lipped about her life. But Cyrus knows Rowan Pope personally and is now being looped into something big regarding Fitz and Jake Ballard.
A Few Memorable Quotes (because we can’t very well quote the entire episode, as much as we would like to)
Eli: You have to be twice as good – twice as good as them to get half of what they have.
Olivia: I am many things. Stupid is not one of them.
Cyrus: The people elected you to be the President’s sidekick, not the Lord. The Lord did not fill out his voter registration card, so guess what? The Lord does not have the right to vote in the United States of America.
Secret Service Agent: The President is with the First Lady. In private. Having personal… private time.
Cyrus: Fitz and Mellie. I’m sorry, you’re saying the President is off with his wife, with Mellie, having a quickie?
Secret Service Agent: They didn’t say how long they’d be. Sir.
Quinn: It’s not too late to turn back. Can’t we just kill another intern? It wouldn’t be that hard. [Gladiators give her shocked looks] What? A bad one! The worst one.
This was such a terrific season opener! This episode had it all – tension, emotion, high energy and – of course – plenty of signature Shonda Rhime speeches.
Olivia’s wardrobe is a huge facet of her character. Check out the white coat she was wearing in this episode here. It’s a Burberry Prorsum Caped Duchess Satin Trenchcoat.
David Rosen wants Abby to return his calls. Do it, girl!
He may be Satan but meeting Olivia’s dad was pretty fantastic.
Eli’s speech about Olivia having to be “twice as good as them” was one of the best moments of the entire episode.
‘Scandal’ Season 3 premiere: Olivia springs to action in ‘It’s Handled,’ as the show returns on top
“Oh, my God,” Cyrus says, in shock. Oh, my God, indeed.
Just like that, we have what looks like our next big mystery. What happened with Fitz and Jake in Iran? I, for one, can hardly wait to find out. Welcome back, “Scandal.” We’ve missed you.
- Though she’s a treacherous snake, it was a bit sad to see Fitz and VP Sally Langham (Kate Burton) finally connect, only for him to be forced to break his word to her. Oh well, it’ll be fun to keep her in the villain column.
- “Couldn’t we just kill another intern? It wouldn’t be that hard.” The Gladiators didn’t have much to do tonight, but that one line, and the way everyone else reacted to it, made clear that Huck (Guillermo Diaz) has lost control of Quinn (Katie Lowes).
- The information Cyrus’ team dug up on Olivia’s past, and how wrong it was in terms of her father, makes me even more excited to learn about the Pope family. What is going on there?
- How soon until Jake gets out of that hole?
Stray observations:Welcome to the Scandal season three reviews. I think we’re going to have a great time.“I am the hell and the high water.” I like Mr. Pope. I think he can stay.I can’t help but melt every time Fitz tells Olivia he loves her, even as I recognize how manipulative and possessive he’s being. He is always a wildcard—always reacting in the most unexpected ways. I love that he wants to marry Liv and make her his first lady, and I hate how high-handed he is with her. And what is all of this stuff, about making a truce with Sally? Is he badly written in his inconsistency, or is this all some grand design?Interesting (and very sad) to learn that Olivia’s mother died when Liv was just 12. What does that do for a girl learning how to be a woman?Abby’s corner: Hey, new hairstyle! I like it!“I am never out of options.” That’s my girl.
